About the Trip

Bhutan is a kingdom that exists at its own pace; a nation that measures prosperity in happiness, where

ancient dzongs guard river confluences and prayer flags drape every mountain pass. This 9-day overland

journey is the most comprehensive Bhutan experience, entering through the border town of Phuentsholing,

ascending through mountains of extraordinary beauty, and unfolding across four of the kingdom's most

celebrated valleys before returning the same way.

With two nights each in Phuentsholing, Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro, this itinerary allows for a deeper

immersion than shorter tours can offer. You'll explore the capital's quirky charm, cross the Dochula Pass at

10,000 feet, visit the majestic Punakha Dzong at the confluence of two rivers, journey to the open

grasslands of the Gangtey Valley where endangered black-necked cranes winter, and stand at the base of

the legendary Tiger's Nest. The overland route adds a dimension that flying cannot; the gradual transition

from Indian plains to Himalayan heights is a journey in itself.

Trip Summary

Day 1 of 9

Bagdogra to Phuentsholing

Upon arrival at Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station, your transfer to Phuentsholing begins. The drive

covers approximately 156 kilometres over 5 hours, taking you through the plains of West Bengal toward the

foothills of the Himalayas. As you approach the border, the landscape begins to shift; flat terrain gives way

to gentle rises, and the first hints of Bhutan's mountain kingdom appear on the horizon.

Phuentsholing is Bhutan's gateway; a bustling border town at the crossing point between Jaigaon in West

Bengal and the Thunder Dragon Kingdom. The contrast between the two sides is immediately apparent.

Your representative will meet and greet you upon arrival. Check into your hotel and take the evening at

leisure.

Wander through the town if you wish; the unique blend of Indian and Bhutanese cultures at this crossroads

is fascinating. Rest well knowing that tomorrow brings immigration formalities and one of the most beautiful

mountain drives in all of Asia.
