How Many Days Do You Need? How To Choose the Best Norway Itinerary!
If you've somehow landed on this little corner of the internet, there's a good chance you're standing exactly where I once stood: dreaming about Norway…
For the longest time, Norway sat firmly at the top of my bucket list (still does). But it also carried a couple of reputations that made it feel almost impossible. One, it's often called one of the most expensive countries in the world. Two, most of us have absolutely no idea how to do justice to everything the country has in store. Both of those are not exactly encouraging.
Thankfully, life has a funny way of working out. I eventually found myself in a place where I could actually sit down with the people who know Norway best. After plenty of conversations with our tour managers and destination experts, one thing became very clear. There isn't one perfect Norway itinerary.
It all depends on what you want from the country. What your idea of Norway looks like. Whether you're here for the fjords, the Arctic, the scenic rail journeys or simply to experience Scandinavia as a whole. And once you understand that, planning the rest becomes a whole lot easier. So, before you start counting your leave days or worrying about the cost of your trip to Norway, here's how I'd decide on the right Norway trip itinerary.
If Norway Is Part of Your Scandinavian Holiday...
This is how many travellers from India experience Norway for the first time. Rather than visiting Norway on its own, they club it with Sweden, Denmark and sometimes Finland, making one beautiful Scandinavian journey. In this case, visiting Norway in 4 days works remarkably well.
A typical route includes Oslo, Geilo and Bergen. Oslo gives you modern Norwegian life with its museums, waterfront promenades and architecture, Geilo breaks up the journey with mountain scenery before you continue towards Bergen, the country's famous fjord gateway with its colourful Bryggen Wharf and spectacular surroundings!
Another equally popular route begins in Stavanger before continuing through Bergen and Oslo, giving travellers a different introduction to Norway's western coastline. Four days may not sound like much, but when thoughtfully planned, it's enough to experience Norway's biggest highlights while continuing onwards to the rest of Scandinavia.

If You Want to Experience Norway More Comfortably...

If Norway is the destination you're most excited about, allowing a little more time makes a noticeable difference. A Norway travel itinerary 6 days long gives you room to experience the country beyond its major cities without feeling like you're constantly moving.
Our longer Scandinavian journeys follow routes through Trondheim, Molde, Loen, Bergen and Oslo, allowing you to experience several very different sides of Norway. Trondheim holds centuries of Viking and medieval history, while Molde and Loen showcase some of western Norway's most stunning landscapes. Bergen naturally remains the gateway to the fjords before the journey concludes in Oslo…

If You Want the Complete Norwegian Experience...
Many travellers searching for a Norway itinerary for 11 days are usually looking for a holiday where Norway takes centre stage rather than sharing the spotlight with neighbouring countries.
That extra time opens up a completely different side of the country. Instead of simply connecting Oslo and Bergen, you can spend additional nights exploring the fjord region, travel further north, include scenic railway journeys such as the Flåm Railway, cruise through UNESCO-listed fjords, go on aurora hunts, drive iconic mountain roads and perhaps even move towards destinations like Tromsø or the Lofoten Islands!
You also gain the freedom to slow down. Spend longer in Bergen's cafés, enjoy a full day exploring the fjords instead of rushing through them, or add experiences like kayaking, hiking or glacier walks without worrying about what you'll have to sacrifice elsewhere! This is where tailor-made holidays come into picture.
When Time (and the Budget) Aren't Holding You Back...
Two weeks or more allows you to experience Norway alone in the best way possible, but not everyone. You can travel the classic tourist circuit and beyond, into the Arctic, spend several nights among the fjords, chase the Northern Lights during winter or experience the Midnight Sun during summer. Smaller fishing villages, scenic ferry crossings, mountain lodges and countless hiking trails all become realistic additions instead of compromises.

How Many Days Do You Really Need in Norway?
If Norway forms part of a larger Scandinavian holiday, visiting Norway in 4 days gives you an excellent introduction to the country's cities, mountains and fjords before continuing into Sweden or Denmark!
If Norway is the destination you've been dreaming about, a Norway travel itinerary 6 days long gives you a far more complete experience. This can also be done as part of a larger Scandinavian experience!
