Zimbabwe, at your own pace

Mosi-oa-Tunya, "the smoke that thunders". If you're anywhere near a hardcore reader, you might have read about David Livingstone's first sight of Victoria Falls in 1855. And it may define Zimbabwe for many, but the country is so much more than the world's largest sheet of falling water. Elephants, riverbanks, ancient stone cities and remarkable landscapes, the place has a lot of stories to tell, and perhaps it's time to hear them for yourself.

The destination

A little about Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe takes its name from a house of stone, literally. Great Zimbabwe is a medieval city built without a single brick of mortar, its walls so precisely stacked that colonial visitors once refused to believe Africans had built it. Travel north from there and the Zambezi drops into a gorge at Victoria Falls, throwing spray high enough to spot from kilometres away. In between sits Hwange National Park, home to one of the largest elephant populations left in Africa, and Mana Pools, where you can walk on foot through floodplains and mahogany forest along the same river that feeds the falls.
