Morocco, at your own pace

Half the "Arabian" markets you've seen on screen were shot in a Moroccan medina, and half the "desert" chase scenes were filmed in its dunes. And here’s where it gets interesting, at its closest point, Morocco with its snow-capped mountains, souks and deserts, sits just 14 kilometres from mainland Europe! This means that a short ferry ride from Spain drops you into a country that doesn't feel like a neighbour in any sense.

The destination

A little about Morocco

Morocco is a country of extremes standing shoulder to shoulder. The Atlantic crashes along one coastline while the Sahara stretches along another, and between them rise the Atlas Mountains, snow-capped for much of the year. It's entirely possible to wake up in the cold air of the mountains and be standing on a warm Saharan dune by the time the sun sets. Marrakech's medina was built centuries ago as a deliberate maze, designed to confuse invaders, it still does an excellent job confusing tourists today. And in Fes stands the world's oldest continuously operating university, older than Oxford, sealed within walls that predate most modern nations altogether.
