Looking at a map of Europe, I'd say the ‘tectonic’ results were very favourable to the Czech Republic. It quite literally won them a geographical lottery of sorts!
Placed almost perfectly in the middle of Europe, it sits within easy reach of Austria, Germany, Slovakia and Hungary, making it one of the continent's most natural additions to a multi-country journey. In fact, there's a good chance you'll first encounter Czechia while travelling between some of its famous neighbours.
That works out rather well because most travellers come for Prague anyway. And Prague, for all its grand castles, Gothic towers and riverside beauty, is wonderfully manageable. Spend three or four days here and you'll leave with the feeling that you've experienced a remarkable amount of both the city and the country around it!
So, if you're looking for a Prague 3 day itinerary as part of a larger European holiday, here's my favourite way to spend your time here.
Priorities Straight: An Evening in Prague's Old Town
Don't worry about "seeing Prague" on your first day. You'll have tomorrow for that. Chances are you'll arrive in Prague sometime during the afternoon or evening. This isn't the day for ticking landmarks off a list anyway. After checking into your hotel, give yourself an hour or so to stretch your legs, shake off the jet lag and get your bearings.
Then, make your way towards Old Town Square. Gothic church spires punctuate the skyline, colourful buildings line the streets and it doesn't take long to understand why Prague is considered one of Europe's great capitals.
You’ll witness street musicians perform beneath centuries-old buildings, outdoor cafés all around the square, and the iconic Astronomical Clock attracting a fair amount of crowd every hour. Rather than trying to squeeze in a lot of sightseeing into this evening, take your time. Sit down somewhere overlooking the square, watch the crowds come and go and enjoy the fact that you're finally in Prague. Don't worry if all you achieve this evening is a slow walk, a good meal and a few photographs.

Give A Day For Castles, Bridges And The Vltava River
1. You can start with Prague Castle, one of the largest ancient castle complexes in the world and easily one of the highlights of any Czech Republic tour itinerary. High above the city, it gives some of the finest views you'll find anywhere in Prague! It has historic courtyards, grand churches, centuries of royal history and beautiful viewpoints that fit together within one remarkable complex.
2. From here, spend some time exploring Prague's historic centre. Walk through the Old Town, cross the iconic Charles Bridge and admire the architecture that has made the city famous across the world.
3. Later in the day, don’t forget to experience Prague from a completely different perspective on a cruise along the Vltava River. This might actually be one of my favourite experiences in the city! The bridges look different from the water. The castle appears even more beautiful from below. The riverside architecture suddenly makes perfect sense. And for a little while, you get to sit back and simply admire the city instead of trying to photograph every corner of it.
4. Make the remainder of the day yours. Perhaps explore the shops around Wenceslas Square. Maybe find a traditional beer hall. Or perhaps do what Prague does best and spend a couple of hours in a café watching the city go by.

The Return of Prague: Why Leaving Makes Coming Back Better

Most travellers following a larger Central European journey leave Prague after these first two days and continue onwards towards destinations such as Vienna, Budapest and Bratislava..
After exploring grand imperial capitals, scenic countryside and neighbouring countries, Prague will feel a little different when you come back. Rather than immediately heading to bed, I'd recommend making the most of your final night.
Walk across Charles Bridge after sunset when the crowds begin thinning out. Enjoy a leisurely dinner in the Old Town or even find a riverside bar overlooking Prague Castle illuminated against the night sky. This return visit also gives you something many travellers miss during their first stop: the chance to experience Prague without feeling pressured to see every major attraction.
You've already done that. Now you simply get to enjoy some more time in it.
One Last Morning Before Departure
I don’t like departure days. Nobody likes departure days. But we should all leave at some point, right? (sad faces). If your flight schedule allows, wake up a little earlier than necessary and spend your final morning exploring one last side of the city.
Perhaps grab coffee and pastries from a traditional café and take a short walk through the quieter streets before the city fully wakes up. It's a small thing, I know, but isn’t it in the little things?
