Croatia has over a thousand islands scattered along its coast, though only about fifty of them are inhabited, leaving hundreds more to explore by boat. Plitvice Lakes National Park holds sixteen terraced lakes connected by waterfalls, all fed by a natural process that's still actively building new travertine barriers today! Dubrovnik's Old Town is entirely walled, a fortress city that's stood since medieval times and survived a siege as recently as the 1990s.
