Most people would have give you a stare if you ask them about Slovenia. But with that said, have you seen the photo of that huge lake with the tiny island church in the middle? That's Slovenia. It really is small enough to drive from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea in under two hours, yet it packs in an outsized range of landscape for its size. Lake Bled holds a tiny island with a church at its centre, reachable only by a traditional wooden gondola boat called a pletna, with a bell inside the church that legend says grants a wish if you ring it. And the word "karst," used worldwide to describe cave-riddled limestone landscapes, actually comes from the Kras region of Slovenia itself, where the phenomenon was first studied…
