I mean, when there’s enough countries squeezed into one small fascinating corner of the world, so much to see there, and so little time, it gets a little tricky deciding what to skip and what you absolutely cannot…
If we’re even slightly similar when it comes to what our idea of travel is, that’s the exact feeling Eastern Europe would leave us with. And the further you go into it, there’s always something about it that makes you want to do more, see more, and squeeze in just one more stop before moving on.
Maybe it’s because distances feel shorter here, transport is quick, borders feel almost effortless to cross, and cities sit surprisingly close to each other. Whatever the reason, most travellers end up packing their Eastern Europe itineraries tighter than planned, because once, I definitely did. So if you’re ready to make the most of your journey, here’s my list of some of the places to visit Eastern Europe and the things to do in them.
#1 Explore Vienna’s Grandeur in Austria
Vienna was one of those cities where I thought I’d just admire the architecture, click a few pictures, and move on. But the city doesn’t let you let you go that easily.
I feel like a city tour through Vienna is easily one of the best things to do in Eastern Europe, especially when you start along the famous Ringstrasse. You’ll pass architectural heavyweights like the Vienna State Opera and grand historic buildings that are somehow a normal part of everyday city life here.
Then there’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral, standing tall right in the heart of the city, drawing you in whether you planned to stop or not. But the unexpected highlight has to be Schönbrunn Palace. Wandering through its lavish halls and perfectly manicured gardens gives you a glimpse into how royals actually lived; and it’s exactly as grand as you’d imagine.
#2 Cruise Through Budapest’s Iconic Skyline in Hungary
Budapest looked beautiful in daylight, but it was purely magical once the lights came on. So here, start with the classics during the day; Buda Castle, the Hungarian Parliament Building, and Heroes’ Square, all of which instantly make you realise how grand and historic this city really is.
But as twilight falls, I urge you to set sail on a Danube River cruise. Watching Budapest’s skyline from the water, with its historic buildings glowing along the riverbanks, is easily one of the most magical things to do in Eastern Europe!

#3 Take a Riverside Detour to Szentendre, Hungary
Just outside Budapest sits Szentendre, a colourful riverside town that feels like a completely different place. Cobblestone streets, tiny art galleries, handmade craft stores, and cafés tucked into quiet corners make this spot perfect for wandering without a plan. It’s one of those places where you end up spending more time than planned simply because it just feels nice to be there.
#4 Wander Through Bratislava’s Pretty Old Town in Slovakia
Bratislava often gets overlooked when listing countries in Eastern Europe, which honestly works in its favour! Its Old Town is compact, less-crowded, easy to explore, and filled with pastel buildings, lively squares, and quirky statues that randomly appear as you walk..
A visit to Bratislava Castle gives you sweeping views of the city and the Danube, and the whole place feels refreshingly relaxed compared to larger European capitals.
#5 Get Lost in Prague’s Storybook Streets, Czech Republic
Prague does not have a bad angle for sure. To start off, walking across Charles Bridge surrounded by Gothic towers and street musicians instantly shows why Prague is one of the most popular places to visit in Eastern Europe.
Then there’s Prague Castle, which feels like an entire historic world sitting above the city. Add the Old Town Square and its famous Astronomical Clock, and you’ve got a place where you’ll probably lose track of time, not that you’ll mind. A peaceful cruise or gentle stroll along the Vltava River is also worth doing, giving you a completely different view of Prague’s skyline.
#6 Step Back in Time in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic
Kutná Hora is proof that some of the most memorable travel moments come from places you didn’t expect. With its medieval character, centuries-old architecture, and quieter atmosphere, the town feels noticeably slower and more immersive than the region’s larger capitals.
Exploring its streets gives you space to actually notice the details of the region, something that often gets lost in busier cities; which is exactly why it remains one of the more underrated places to visit in Eastern Europe.

#7 Discover Salzburg’s Musical and Cultural Legacy in Austria
There’s honestly so much you could say about Salzburg. Some travellers arrive because of Mozart, the city’s most celebrated son. Others come chasing the nostalgia of The Sound of Music and the landscapes that made it iconic.
But whatever brings you here, Salzburg has a way of quietly winning you over the moment you arrive. A visit to Hohensalzburg Fortress offers incredible panoramic views over the city, while Mirabell Palace and its gardens are perfect for a relaxed stroll that somehow feels cinematic. The pastel old town, the fortress watching over the city, the mountains sitting comfortably in the background, it all feels almost too picturesque to be real. I remember thinking the same thing the first time I walked through its streets.
#8 Experience Fairytale Beauty in Hallstatt, Austria
If you’ve ever seen photos of a lakeside European village and thought, this can’t be real, chances are it was Hallstatt. Set beside a mirror-like lake and surrounded by mountains, this tiny village feels almost unreal when you see it in person. Wandering through its narrow streets, waterfront viewpoints, and pretty houses easily makes Hallstatt one of the most beautiful places to visit in Eastern Europe.
#9 Take the Cable Car to Dachstein Glacier in Schladming, Austria
If you enjoy switching things up between cities and nature, the Dachstein Glacier is honestly a pretty unreal experience. The cable car ride itself is something you don’t forget easily. You slowly rise above the valleys until you realise you’re floating over the Alps. At the top, you can walk through the Ice Palace, step onto the suspension bridge, and just stand there staring at mountains going on forever, one of the coolest things to do among all the countries in Eastern Europe.
