I can see the verdict forming already. New Zealand's that small shape (looks like a wonky boot to me) next to Australia, right? A week should suffice, no? Oh how I'd love to pop that ‘deceptive’ bubble.
New Zealand only ‘looks’ small. In reality, it's about the same size as Italy. Now whether that's comforting or slightly alarming, I'll let you decide… It's also roughly 1,600 kilometres from top to tail. You could drive London to Milan and still not cover that distance… The reason I used the word ‘deceptive’ earlier is because almost everyone underestimates it. The map flattens distances here that take real days to cross. So getting the length of your trip right matters when your budget or your annual leave won't stretch to cover a mistake.
Of course, the ideal duration depends on what you want from the trip, but whether you're looking for your perfect New Zealand itinerary, comparing different New Zealand trip itinerary options, or wondering if you should visit New Zealand in 12 days or stretch it into more than a couple of weeks, here's how I'd look at it.
If It's Your First Time in New Zealand...
For most first time travellers from India, I'd recommend setting aside 10 days. It gives you enough time to experience both islands without having to cut out places that deserve to be there.
A typical 10 nights New Zealand itinerary begins in Auckland before heading to Rotorua, where bubbling geothermal parks, Māori culture and glowworm caves welcomes you to a side of New Zealand that's unlike anywhere else in the world.
From there, the journey moves to the South Island, where alpine landscapes completely change the feel of the holiday. Depending on the route, you'll travel through places such as Christchurch, Greymouth or Franz Josef before reaching Queenstown, where adventure, lake views and mountain scenery all co-exist. Every itinerary is slightly different, with some focusing more on scenic rail journeys while others spend extra time exploring the glaciers or New Zealand's famous west coast. If you're planning to visit New Zealand in 11 days, this is the itinerary most travellers find gives them exactly the right introduction to the country.

If You Have A Few Extra Days In Your Pocket...
If you have a few extra days to spare, forget what I said earlier and read this instead.
A New Zealand itinerary for 14 days gives you the luxury of travelling at a far more comfortable pace. Instead of moving on just when you've started enjoying a place, you actually get time to stay longer. Maybe that means another evening by Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown, an extra stop along the rugged West Coast, or simply not having to wake up before sunrise every other day (I see you, sleepyhead).
Our longer journeys also introduce destinations that shorter itineraries often skip. Along with Auckland, Franz Josef Glacier, Mount Cook and Queenstown, you'll travel through places such as Nelson and Punakaiki, each giving you a completely different side of New Zealand. Nelson brings together beaches, vineyards and an easy-going coastal atmosphere, while Punakaiki's Pancake Rocks and Tasman Sea coastline remind you just how varied the country really is.
When Time (and the Budget) Aren't Holding You Back...
Of course, fourteen days doesn't have to be the limit. Some want to spend longer hiking around Aoraki / Mount Cook. Others would happily dedicate a few extra days to Queenstown, drive deeper into Fiordland, explore the Bay of Islands or simply experience New Zealand at a much more relaxed pace.
That's usually where tailor-made holidays come in. Rather than following a fixed departure and route, your itinerary is built around your own travel dates, interests and priorities. Want to spend three nights in Queenstown instead of two? Add a luxury lodge overlooking the Southern Alps? Include a wine trail around Marlborough? Or perhaps club New Zealand with Australia? It's all possible.
If you're searching for a New Zealand travel itinerary for two weeks or longer, a tailor-made holiday gives you complete flexibility while we take care of every detail behind the scenes.

Which New Zealand Itinerary Should You Choose?
For most first-time visitors, an 11-day itinerary is where I'd start. It introduces you to both islands, covers New Zealand's biggest highlights and leaves you feeling like you've truly experienced the country.
If you have a little more time, though, a New Zealand itinerary that’s 14 days long does cover more places and have better breathing space. Either way, there isn't really a wrong answer. The best itinerary is simply the one that fits the time you have, the experiences you're looking for and the way you enjoy travelling.
