A Place That Works For Two: Things to Do in Japan for Couples…

A Place That Works For Two: Things to Do in Japan for Couples…

Table of Contents

Hello lovely globetrotters! I’m glad you made it to this little corner of the internet, again.

If you’re here today, I'm PRETTY (around 90%) sure that you’re dreaming of spending your honeymoon in Japan. If that's not the case (and I'm wrong), you might be taking a break to celebrate what you’ve built together?

Regardless of what it is, that's pretty exciting, congratulations! I understand that this is the kind of trip you’ll probably look back on for years, therefore I also understand that there’s a bit of pressure to get it right.

And while there’s no shortage of guides out there, most of them follow the same, well-worn path. All great, no doubt, but often experienced in exactly the same way. The thing is, especially when you’re travelling as a pair, Japan offers far more than just the obvious.

So if you’re looking for not-so-touristy things to do in Japan for couples, here’s what I think should genuinely make the cut…

1. Sail Under Cherry Blossoms on a Chidorigafuchi Boat Ride

The Boat rides at Chidorigafuchi get totally packed during cherry blossom season, and by packed, I mean people lining up before it even opens (that should tell you something). The boating usually starts around 9:00 AM, but if you show up at that time, you might already be late. Aim for at least 8:00 AM, grab a coffee or quick breakfast, and just wait it out.

I’ll tell you why getting there early is important. You won’t be stuck in a long queue, you get the first pick of boats, and you’ll even catch the lake with all the boats just sitting there, that’s a pretty decent view…

Now, there are three types of boats for you to choose; swan boats (the obvious tourist pick), pedal boats, and the simple rowboats. I’d suggest the rowboat as it’s open and feels way less gimmicky. Also, one person rows the whole time, so pick wisely, there's no switching halfway.

Once you’re out, the experience is beautiful. You’re rowing slowly along the moat, cherry blossom branches brushing close enough to catch in your hands, petals drifting onto the water, and the reflection of pink everywhere as the cherry on top. It’s one of those unique romantic places in Japan you must experience with your loved one!

2. Become 5 Years Younger in a Private Onsen!

Booking a ryokan with a private hot spring bath helps you truly disconnect. The water comes straight from geothermally heated springs, full of minerals the Japanese swear by for their health (some even claim a dip makes you feel five years younger). For couples, it’s perfect. You can simply be together without all the distractions.

Clothing here is minimal (sometimes very minimal), a towel here, a robe there, letting you fully sink into the experience without worrying about how or if you should dress.

Japan is volcanic, so it’s blessed with over 30,000 naturally occurring hot springs and more than 3,000 onsen resorts. You can pick one tucked away in the woods, on a mountainside, or inside a traditional ryokan. And yes, there’s a little extra in the rituals and gifts that come with it, as some ryokans provide bath salts, small towels, or other keepsakes to remember the experience. It surely is one of the most relaxing things to do in Japan for couples.

3. Walk Through The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto

You’ve probably seen this place a lot of times. Where, you might ask? Remember those tall bamboo tree shots were all over Pinterest when it first launched?

It’s not some far-off location, a short train ride from Kyoto will get you there, which makes it one of the easiest things to do in Japan for couples. Getting there also adds to the experience, as you cross the Katsura River, walk a bit along the water, and then slowly make your way toward the grove.

The first thing you’ll probably notice? It’s smaller than you might have imagined. Most people expect something massive, but it’s actually quite compact. Still, once you’re walking through it, with bamboo rising straight up on both sides and light filtering through, it does feel magical, to say the least. It’s also completely free and open at all times (can’t top that), which means you can go early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid crowds.

4. Up, Up and Above: Seeing Tokyo from the Sky Tree!

There’s usually a bit of a queue, but international visitors can book fast-track tickets, which makes a big difference. You’re in and out of the ticketing line quickly, and within 15–20 minutes, you’re already heading up in the elevator.

Tokyo looks completely different from above. From the ground, it feels busy and noisy and all of that. From here, you realise how massive it actually is, not just skyscrapers, but endless stretches of low-rise and mid-rise buildings going on in every direction…

As far as things to do in Japan for couples go, this is one of those where you just stand still for a bit and be in awe. Oh, almost forgot, on clearer days, you can even spot Mount Fuji in the distance, making it one of the best things to do in Tokyo for couples. It’s faint sometimes, especially if it’s a bit hazy, but when you do catch it, it gives something extra to the whole experience!

If you’d rather leave all the planning to the experts, take a look at this Japan Tour For Couples With Cherry Blossoms for an immersive journey!

5. Get Closer to Mount Fuji: Climb It, Get Close to It, or Just Find the Right View

If you’re not planning to climb all the way to the top (which most people don’t), the easiest way to get close is the Fifth Station. It sits roughly halfway up the mountain and is accessible by road, so you can take a bus or drive up without doing a full hike. Up there, you’ve got stunning views, a few shops, food stalls, even a small shrine, all of which makes it easy to enjoy each other’s company peacefully.

If you do want a bit of movement without committing to a full climb, there are shorter trails around the Fifth Station itself. There’s even a circular walking trail at that level, post which you can comfortably say “I hiked Mount Fuji” (without the 8–10 hour effort). Now, if you’re actually considering climbing it, that’s a different story. The main trail (Yoshida Trail) takes about 5–7 hours up and 3–5 hours down, and most people do it during the official season (July to September). It’s doable, but it’s not exactly a casual couple activity unless you’re both prepared for it.

For most people though, the best version of Mount Fuji is just… finding the right place to look at it. The Kawaguchiko area is probably the easiest for this. You’ve got lakeside views, ropeways that take you up for a wider perspective, and even iconic spots like the pagoda viewpoint where Fuji sits perfectly in the background.

For The Two of You: Things to Do in Japan for Couples…

6. What Better Way to Celebrate Love Than Among Cherry Blossoms?

Each petal falls at around five centimetres per second. I know, it sounds like a random fact… but it's insane how slow everything feels you’re actually sitting under those pink clouds.

That’s really the point of Sakura season. You don’t run around trying to “cover” it. The best way to do it is to pick one place; Ueno Park in Tokyo, Maruyama Park in Kyoto, or even a quieter riverside stretch, and just stay. Grab something small to eat, sit under the trees, and let time pass without constantly moving.

I feel like this is easily one of the most romantic things to do in Japan for couples. Where else are you just sitting close, sharing food, cracking jokes, while petals land on your hands, your clothes, even your food? And you don’t really care, because all that matters in that moment is the time you’re spending together?

7. Find Your Foot in The Sands of Okinawa!

It’s hard to imagine that Okinawa and its beaches are part of Japan, because it’s not how you usually picture the country. This chain of islands, once known as the Ryukyu Kingdom, sits far to the south and has a way of life that’s noticeably slower than mainland Japan. Warm weather almost all year round, clear turquoise water, and beaches with soft, almost powdery sand makes it perfect for couples to just enjoy each other’s company without feeling like you have to be anywhere else…

You can do a lot of things here as well, perhaps snorkel at Aharen Beach, walk along Nishibama Beach and watch stunning sunsets at Maehama Beach! There are also smaller, slightly different spots, like walking through the natural rock arch at Sunayama Beach, checking out the coral-rich waters at Yonahara, or taking a glass-bottom boat ride at Kabira Bay if you’d rather stay dry and still see what’s underneath!

Because of how spread out the islands are, you don’t feel crowded the way you might in cities, making it easily one of the most relaxing things to do in Japan for couples!

8. Wear a Kimono and Just Make Tea?

Too touristy? Once you step into a hundred-year-old teahouse tucked away in Kyoto’s traditional Sannenzaka district, that feeling goes away pretty quickly.

It’s very minimal altogether. Tatami mats, low seating (or stools if needed), and large windows that usually frame a small garden. The ceremony itself goes back over 500 years. What you’re watching is a series of very intricate movements, from how the tea is prepared, how the utensils are handled, even how the bowl is turned before drinking. There’s usually a theme behind it too, something like ichigo ichie, the idea that this exact moment won’t happen again.

You’re then guided through making your own matcha, whisking it till it froths, learning how to hold the bowl, when to turn it, and how to drink it properly. It’s paired with a small seasonal sweet (wagashi), which is designed to balance the bitterness of the tea and often reflects the time of year.

The thing is, you’re both doing something wonderfully new, slightly unfamiliar, but together, putting it among one of the most popular things to do in Japan for couples.

9. Dotonbori River Cruise: Osaka, This Time From the Water

Dotonbori at night is a place FULL of people, which is why getting on the water makes so much sense.

You’ve two options here. If you want something lively, there are cruises with guides, lights and music, where the boat almost feels like a floating show. If you’re here for the classic experience, the open boats give you uninterrupted views of the billboards, with proper stops in front of the Glico Man so you can actually get that photo without fighting the crowd. And then there’s the quieter version, smaller, more private boats where you can play your own music, sit back, and just drift through the city lights without all the glitter. It’s only about 20 minutes, but it’s easily one of those things to do in Japan for couples that are truly enjoyable!

10. Take a scenic route together…

The Sagano Romantic Train in Kyoto is truly among the most effortless things to do in Japan for couples. The train moves along the Hozugawa River, cutting through forests and valleys, with large open windows (and even fully open-air carriages) so you’re not just looking at the view side by side, you’re actually in it. Also, depending on the season, it changes completely, cherry blossoms in spring, deep greens in summer, fiery autumn colours, even snow filled landscapes in winter. Which would you choose?

Before you lock dates, here’s a guide to the best time to visit the most romantic places in Japan so you can plan it right!
