STORY TIME!

I recently came across this experience a person had in Japan, where he had close to four hours to kill before heading back home. So he decided to step out with his camera, which he said was very new ( one of his “finally” purchases).

He took a bunch of photos, got back to the hotel, took a shower… and then boom, he’d left the camera in the taxi. He had no receipt, no cab number, not even a vague memory of what the car looked like. He was pretty sure it was gone, but he told the hotel anyway, more out of habit than hope.

And then about two hours later, he gets a call, the camera’s back at the front desk. The driver had returned it. He tried handing him some money, but he wouldn’t take it. Same with the front desk staff. From what he offered, they only took a couple of notes and said it was for the person who had called every taxi operator’s office to find it.

That little story made me look at things a little differently about Japan. And the more I looked around, the more I dug deep, the more I realised that it wasn’t just a one-off case. There are countless more interesting facts about Japan that will surprise you. Here are a few of them I could find.

1. Go ahead, slurp. No one’s judging.

Japan takes manners very seriously, but when there's a bowl of noodles in front of you, all of that goes out the window!

When you’re eating ramen or soba, slurping is actually a very good sign. Culturally, it signals appreciation. You’re showing the chef you’re enjoying the meal, but it also helps cool the noodles down so you’re not just burning your mouth every bite. You’ll notice that no one’s trying to be neat about it, and some places even keep bibs around, mostly for people who aren’t used to this…

2. Bowing is so normal, even the deer do it!

In Nara, especially around Todai-ji Temple and the surrounding park, you’ll see deer everywhere, literally hundreds of them just walking around freely. They’re considered sacred, tied to local Shinto beliefs, which is why they’ve been protected here for centuries.

You can buy special crackers (shika senbei) from stalls nearby, and the moment you have one in your hand, they’ll know. Now here’s the part that catches people off guard, before you feed them, try giving a small bow. A lot of the deer will bow back!

It’s not some trained trick, they’ve just learned over time that bowing usually gets them food. Some are polite about it, some get a bit impatient, but either way, it turns into a funny little interaction you don’t really expect. Among all the facts about Japan, this is probably the one that feels the most amazing in real life.

3. Square? Watermelons?

Japan takes its fruits very seriously, and high-quality fruit is often treated as a gift item, which is why you’ll see things like perfectly shaped melons selling for way more than you’d expect.

Square watermelons started out as a practical idea, grown inside boxes so they’d fit neatly into small Japanese refrigerators. But over time, they became more of a novelty. They look perfect, but they’re usually harvested early, which is why they won’t be as sweet as regular ones.

Most aren’t even ripe when sold. They’re displayed as luxury items or gifts, often priced far higher than regular fruit, making it one of the most quirky facts about Japan in our list!

5. The number 4? Not a fan.

I’ll have 3… actually, make it 5.

The number 4 is pronounced “shi” in Japanese, which is the same pronunciation used for “death.” Because of this, it’s considered unlucky, especially in hospitals or residential buildings. You’ll often see floor numbers skip from 3 to 5, or room numbers adjusted to avoid it.

So if you don’t see a fourth floor there, don’t be surprised. It’s subtle, but once you notice it, you’ll keep spotting it everywhere, one of those things to know about Japan that will save you the confusion. Oh, and if you were counting, you might have noticed that there’s no number 4. Thought I'd play along too!

6. Can One Onsen Bath Make You “3 years younger”?

Japan sits on a volcanic belt, which is why it has thousands of natural hot springs, known as onsens. These waters are rich in minerals like sulfur, iron, and magnesium, and different onsens are believed to help with different things like muscle recovery, skin health, circulation.

The “three years younger” idea isn’t anywhere close to being scientific, but it comes from long-standing beliefs around the restorative effects of these baths. Still, out of all the facts about Japan, this is one people don’t mind believing. But as far as I see it, we can’t rule it out either, I mean, that longevity has to come from somewhere?

7. Get Anything From Vending Machines

Japan has one of the highest numbers of vending machines per capita in the world, we’re talking about taking millions across the country!

And they’re not limited to drinks or snacks. You’ll find machines selling magazines, flowers, hot meals, umbrellas, and even adult toys! Part of why this works is the low crime rate and the general respect for public property. Machines are rarely vandalised, and people use them as intended, a rather pleasing one among many Japan facts.

8. Expect 300+ Wacky KitKat Flavours

You’ll come across things like green tea Kit Kats, but that’s just the start! Wasabi KitKats, roasted soybean KitKats, sweet potato KitKats, even seasonal ones show up for a while and disappear. KitKats are a big deal here, partly because the name sounds like “kitto katsu”, which loosely translates to “you’ll surely win,” so people gift them as good luck tokens, especially around exams. You’ll find ice creams and snacks experimenting with flavours that sound odd at first, like soy sauce, matcha, or even savoury twists

9. People Dress by the Season, Not the Weather

In Japan, there’s a strong sense of seasonality, not just in food or festivals, but in clothing too. Spring, summer, autumn, winter, each has a visual identity, and many people tend to follow it. So even if the temperature changes slightly, the clothing often stays in line with the season, so if you wear short sleeves before June, you might get some looks. This is one of those things to know about Japan that you will notice eventually once you’re there…

10. Vegetarian Food Takes a Bit of Effort

Japanese cuisine uses a lot of mild ingredients, like the most common dashi, a broth often made with fish. So even though most dishes may look vegetarian, they may not be.

That said, there’s shojin ryori, a traditional Buddhist style of cooking that avoids all animal products. It focuses on seasonality, and flavour through plant-based ingredients. It’s one of those facts about Japan that’s good to know before you go if you’re following a vegan lifestyle.

11. Trains Timings Are Perfect!

Trains here run on tight schedules, and delays are rare. Drivers are trained on highly detailed simulators and usually operate the same line every day, so they know it inside out, speed, stops, timing, all of it. When delays do happen, they’re usually measured in seconds, not minutes.

On average, delays are said to be around 18 seconds, which tells you everything about how seriously timing is taken! There was even an incident where a train left 25 seconds early, and the company issued a public apology. This might be one of those Japan facts that sounds exaggerated, but wait till you experience it!

If you’re planning seriously, it helps to know the numbers. Take a look at this Japan trip cost from India guide for a clearer idea.

12. Mount Fuji Is Not Always There…

You’d think Japan’s most famous view would just… be there all the time. But most of the time, it’s hidden behind clouds, haze, or just the kind of humidity that makes everything look a bit washed out. Even on clear days in the city, Fuji can still be missing.

On average, it’s fully visible for only around 70–80 days a year, mostly during colder months when the air is clearer. It’s just one of those facts about Japan worth keeping in mind.

Not sure when to go? This guide to the best time to visit Japan will help you figure it out.

13. Cat Islands!

There are places in Japan where cats genuinely outnumber people. Islands like Aoshima and Tashirojima started off with cats being brought in to control pests, especially around fishing communities. Over time, the human population dropped, but the cats stayed, and multiplied.

Now, they’ve become a bit of a draw. People show up just to see them, that tourism helps keep these small places going. It's just cats, everywhere you look, but if the felines don’t interest you, there’s also Okunoshima, where rabbits have taken over instead!

14. Floors That Squeak, On Purpose?

Some old Japanese homes and castles were designed so the floors couldn’t be walked on quietly. These are called “nightingale floors,” and they make a soft chirping sound with every step. The idea was simple, if someone tried to sneak in, you’d hear them.

This goes back to the feudal era, when the threat of spies and assassins, often linked to ninja lore was taken seriously. Whether or not ninjas were as mythical as stories make them out to be, the precaution was very real.

If Japan’s been on your list, this is a good place to start. Take a look at these Japan journeys by Cox & Kings and see what fits the kind of trip you have in mind.
